Ireland Women

For the first time in T20I history, the Ireland women’s cricket team defeated their English rivals, clinching a dramatic second match of the series in Dublin by five wickets with just one ball remaining. Christina Coulter Reilly ran two runs after Mady Villiers missed a throw, enabling her team to chase down 170 on the penultimate ball of the innings.

With seven runs required, the last over was given to England’s Mady Villiers, who had bowled three wicketless overs and given away 24 runs. Leah Paul managed to take a single then Sarah Forbes came in and got out after scoring just one boundary.

Eva Canning was dismissed without troubling the scorer and it all boiled down to Reilly. The right-hander played a half-hearted shot down the ground which Villiers managed to stop but she didn’t manage to hit at the stumps with a direct throw leading to overthrows.

This pair made quick doubles with an unbelievable dive from Paul at the non-striker’s end bringing the chase home. This meant that Irish women made it equal in their two match series leaving behind Villiers who remained disconsolate.

Orla Prendergast led Ireland’s pursuit with 80 runs from 51 balls

In the opening over, Amy Hunter was dismissed by the hosts cheaply and they were chasing a target of 170. However, the run-chase was mainly built on partnership between Orla Prendergast and Gaby Lewis who is also the team captain.

The duo added 79 runs together before Lewis got out for 38 off 35 deliveries. Thus she left her position when there were 163 runs in total on the board in 19th over of the innings but it was not good that it should have been an easy win for Ireland but instead towards the end a hint of fear came into play.

Prendergast was also named Player of the Match having taken two wickets and later on scored 80 runs from just 51 balls. They also picked up two scalps apiece to restrict the tourists to 169/8 by Arlene Kelly and Aimee McGuire as well. Leading scorer from England was Tammy Beaumont who made 40 with her seven boundaries off 34 balls.
