England‘s star batter Joe Root brought up his 36th Test century with a reverse ramp shot for a boundary on Day 3 of the second Test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. It was also his third century in New Zealand, as he played a key role in dominating the hosts.
The moment occurred during the 83rd over bowled by Will O’Rourke. Replays showed Root getting an edge off his glove, guiding the ball over the keeper and slip cordon for a boundary. He later drove another boundary down the ground, but O’Rourke dismissed him on the third delivery.

England captain Ben Stokes declared the innings right after Root’s dismissal, with the score at 427-6 and a commanding lead of 582, putting New Zealand in a challenging position.
England’s bowlers impressed once again following Joe Root’s 36th century
England’s bowlers, who had routed New Zealand for 125 to gain a 155-run first-innings lead, were in top form again from the start. Only Kiwi captain Tom Latham reached double figures among the top four batters, as New Zealand quickly collapsed to 59/4 in 14 overs.
Daryl Mitchell (32) and Glenn Phillips (16) also failed to make a significant impact. However, keeper-batter Tom Blundell broke his slump with a quickfire century, and Nathan Smith contributed with 42. Despite this, the remaining New Zealand batters fell easily, resulting in a heavy 323-run defeat.
Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, and Shoaib Bashir took two wickets each, while Ben Stokes claimed three. Gus Atkinson, who had taken a hat-trick in the first innings, picked up one more wicket.
With back-to-back Test losses following their series win in India, New Zealand’s chances of making the World Test Championship (WTC) final have taken a significant blow.
