Australia faced a fresh injury concern as pacer Josh Hazlewood was sent for scans on his calf after bowling just one over on Day 4 (Tuesday, December 17) of the third Border-Gavaskar Test against India at The Gabba, Brisbane. The New South Wales bowler returned to the field later but appeared off rhythm, delivering a loose ball to KL Rahul.
Before exiting the field with team physio Nick Jones, Hazlewood had an extended discussion with captain Pat Cummins and Steve Smith during the drinks break. A Cricket Australia spokesperson, quoted by ESPNcricinfo, provided an update on the injury:
“Josh Hazlewood reported calf awareness in this morning’s warm-up. He will be taken for scans to assess the injury.”
The spokesperson stated that their focus was on getting the right-arm seamer ready for the fourth Test in Melbourne, adding:
“[We told him] it’s about preparing for the MCG because there’s a good chance we might need you. History suggests there’s always some form of natural attrition throughout a Test series.”
”A good thing [is], he’s probably played a Test earlier in the series than he maybe thought. Showed that his standard’s still super high. [It’s] about trying to set him up for the last two Test matches.”
Josh Hazlewood came in for Scott Boland in the third BGT 2024-25 Test at The Gabba
Hazlewood replaced Scott Boland for the third Test of the series in Brisbane after Boland featured in the pink-ball Test at Adelaide Oval, stepping in for the injured 33-year-old who had suffered a side strain. Despite Boland’s promising performance, he couldn’t retain his spot.
Hazlewood, however, made an immediate impact on Day 3 by dismissing Virat Kohli for just 3. It remains uncertain whether the management will risk him for the remaining Tests. The Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) begins on December 26.
