Sri Lanka’s emerging batting star, Kamindu Mendis, scored consecutive centuries against New Zealand in the current two-match Test series. He reached his fifth Test century in just 13 innings, taking 147 balls during the second Test in Galle on Day 2 (Friday, September 27).

Mendis achieved this milestone in the 125th over of Sri Lanka’s first innings, clipping a length ball from Glenn Phillips toward square leg. The 25-year-old removed his cap to acknowledge the cheers from the home crowd. Sony LIV shared the video on X, stating:

“Another day, another Kamindu Mendis special. The local lad registers his 5th Test ton in just his eighth game, as Sri Lanka soar past 400 in their first dig!”

On Day 1, Kamindu Mendis made history as the first player to score eight fifties in consecutive Tests since his debut. With over 900 runs in 13 innings, he is close to becoming the fastest Sri Lankan to reach 1,000 runs in Test cricket. The current record is held by Roy Dias, who accomplished it in 23 innings.

A strong batting performance from Kamindu Mendis propelled Sri Lanka to dominate New Zealand on Day 2 of the second Test. As of this update, the hosts were at 445/5, with Kamindu and Kusal Mendis batting. On Day 1, Dinesh Chandimal was the top scorer, making 116 off 208 balls with 16 boundaries.

Angelo Mathews contributed 88 runs off 185 balls, while Dhananjaya de Silva added 44 off 80. Glenn Phillips stood out for the Kiwis, taking three wickets. Sri Lanka, led by Dhananjaya de Silva, is already ahead in the Test series 1-0 after their 63-run win in the first Test, where Kamindu scored 114 off 173 balls.
