Joining India‘s support staff as assistant coach for the tour of Sri Lanka is former Netherlands all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate to team up with former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar. Newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir will constitute their working pair. While Gambhir was the mentor, Doeschate and Nayar became assistant coaches of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) who won IPL 2024.
India is scheduled to play three T20Is and three ODIs in Sri Lanka from July 27 to 7 August. First match for Gambhir as head coach took over from Rahul Dravid. Gambhir will have his former teammates, ten Doeschate as well as Nayar by his side as assistant coaches during the trip to Sri Lanka while trying to persuade Morne Morkel to be India’s new bowling coach.
One former Dutch all-rounder who has attracted a great deal of praise from Gambhir is ten Doeschate. He eulogized him to high heavens during KKR’s jersey launch event at the start of this year, referring to him as ‘the biggest team player’ he has ever played with and somebody he is ready to lay down his life for.

“When I talk about selflessness, the greatest team man I have ever played with, the most selfless human being, someone I can take a bullet for, someone I can trust for life … In 2011, my first game as a KKR captain, we only had four overseas players available. This man had a fabulous 50-over World Cup,” Gambhir had said during the jersey launch.
“We went into that game with only three overseas players. He was carrying drinks in that game with no disappointment on his face. He taught me selflessness – Ryan ten Doeschate. These are people who taught me to be a leader,” the 42-year-old had added.
Back in November 2022 Ten Doeschate took up the post of fielding coach at Kolkata Knight Riders franchise.
Who exactly is Ryan ten Doeschate?
For the Netherlands, Ten Doeschate has played 33 one-day internationals and 24 twenty-twenty matches making 1541 and 533 runs in these formats respectively. He has scored five centuries in ODI cricket. A medium pace bowler who took 55 wickets at an average of about 37 runs per wicket in ODIs and 13 at just over 24 runs in T20Is is how you would describe him – a promising all-rounder indeed.

Between 2011 and 2015, Ten Doeschate played in 29 matches of the IPL and scored 326 runs at a strike rate of 138.72 while claiming two wickets at an economy rate of 7.23. In fact, he is presently among the assistant coaches at Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) under head coach Phil Simmons, having previously been Kent’s batting coach.
