India’s premier seamer, Jasprit Bumrah, emerged as the hero for his team on the first day of the much-anticipated Boxing Day Test in Melbourne when he removed the dangerous Usman Khawaja. Bumrah was brought into the attack to bowl to the dangerous combination of Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne. He produced deliverables in the form required by his side and clean bowled Khawaja on the first ball of his new spell.

A moment that raised curiosity happened just before the tea break when Mohammed Siraj tried to ridicule Labuschagne. Partway through a long spell, Siraj changed the bails on the side of the non-striker, which raised the eyebrows of the fans. This superstition appeared to be auspicious for India as Bumrah got rid of Khawaja only two overs later.

The wicket of Bumrah was a big one for India overall because it gave the Indian bowlers a much-needed boost. From this wicket, India will aim to get on bowling pressure and not allow Australia’s batting line-up to dominate.

Australia lost a valuable wicket of Usman Khawaja after Indian pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah came into the picture on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Bumrah was brought into the crease with an intention of ending the solid-looking stand and the paceman did not disappoint. However, the way the dismissal was done came as a surprise to everybody.

Bumrah produced a short of length out of the stump delivery that was an above-waist-high delivery not suitable for a pull shot. However, Khawaja tried pulling the ball and he was all the while early on the ball. It went straight to KL Rahul at midwicket for a catch that looked like a piece of cake. The replays suggested that the ball had actually flicked the toe end of Khawaja’s bat.

It can be seen from the figure that Bumrah was in a state of surprise after getting a wicket with this kind of ball. Surprisingly, the Indian pacer’s chance to reply to them left him stunned and this shows how most of the time, in the game, wishes and expectations do not go as planned. Even though the lucky escape, it was a big sucker punch to India’s bowling momentum and more so for Bumrah, who has been off color for the maximum part of the series.
