Batting first, Australia put on 177 runs before getting bowled out. Ravindra Jadeja picked up a five-wicket haul in his comeback game, to restrict the Aussies below 200. In response, the Indian team got off to a good start but kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Todd Murphy was the pick of the bowlers for Australia taking all four wickets.

In the sixth over, Nathan Lyon finally got the reward for his work, as he dismissed Suryakumar Yadav. He bowled an off-spin delivery from round the wicket, which Suryakumar Yadav drive through the covers. However, the Indian batter missed the delivery as it turned square, and the ball went through the gap between his bat and pad to rattle the stumps. Suryakumar Yadav had to walk back to the pavilion for just eight runs in his debut Test.
