Australian skipper Pat Cummins sought a DRS review on Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test against India, disputing the third umpire’s decision. With Australia eager to claim the final wicket for a strong first-innings lead, Cummins believed Mohammed Siraj had edged the ball to Steve Smith at second slip.
On-field umpires referred the delivery to the third umpire to check for a bump ball. After a quick review, the third umpire ruled it not out, leaving Cummins visibly frustrated. Despite his repeated signals for a review, the on-field umpires declined his request.

Luckily for Cummins and Australia, the decision didn’t prove costly as Nathan Lyon dismissed Nitish Kumar Reddy three balls later without any additional runs. As a result, India was bowled out for 369, giving Australia a crucial 105-run first-innings lead.
“Only two replays” – Ravi Shastri comments on the situation
Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri was surprised that the third umpire only had two looks before ruling on the potential Mohammed Siraj dismissal. Meanwhile, former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist was stunned by Pat Cummins’ attempt to review a decision already turned down by the third umpire.
“The umpire said I’ve seen the ball bounce after it hit the bat. That was a very quick call, a very quick call, just two replays,” said Shastri on commentary [via TOI].
Gilchrist shared his opinion on the incident, saying:
“This is very interesting. I’ve never seen this before. He is saying, ‘You as umpires, took it upstairs on your own behalf, but I want to review the decision.’ I do think it needs to be looked at very closely.”
