In a recent interview, Team India batter KL Rahul faced a tricky situation when asked to choose an IPL 2025 teammate from a list of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni. While Rohit, Kohli, and Dhoni were retained by their respective franchises, Rahul was released by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
Rahul served as the captain of LSG from 2022 to 2024, leading the team to the playoffs in 2022 and 2023, but they fell short of winning the title each time. In 2024, LSG struggled, finishing seventh on the points table.
Meanwhile, Rohit, Kohli, and Dhoni were retained by Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai respectively, while Rahul will enter the IPL 2025 mega auction with the highest base price of ₹2 crore.
During his appearance on Star Sports, the 32-year-old faced a challenging question in a segment called ‘KL in a pickle’. The first question asked was:
“Pick an IPL teammate in 2025 – Rohit, Virat or Dhoni?”
As anticipated, the right-handed batter found it somewhat difficult to respond to the question. He answered:
“I don’t know. It’s a tough one. This is a real pickle you have put me in. I have enjoyed playing with all of them. Very tough to answer.”

Kohli (8,004) holds the record as the all-time leading run-scorer in the IPL, with Rohit (6,628) ranked third. Dhoni (5,243) sits sixth among the top run-getters, while Rahul (4,683) is currently in 11th place.
Gautam Gambhir has expressed his confidence in Rahul to deliver in Australia
Rahul was part of the Indian team that suffered a 3-0 defeat to New Zealand in the three-match Test series at home. The right-handed batter scored 0 and 12 in the first Test at his home ground in Bengaluru, after which he was dropped from the playing XI for the remaining two matches.
Amidst questions about Rahul’s inclusion in the Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, head coach Gautam Gambhir came out in support of the struggling cricketer. Speaking to the media before India’s departure for Australia, he said:
“…He can bat at the top of the order, he can bat at No. 3 and he can actually bat at No. 6 as well. You need quite a lot of talent to be doing these kinds of jobs as well. And he’s kept wickets in the one-day format as well. Imagine how many countries have players like KL who can open the batting and can bat at No. 6 as well?”
Rahul was included in the India A playing XI for the second unofficial Test against Australia A in Melbourne. However, he had a disappointing performance, getting out for scores of 4 and 10, as India A lost the match by six wickets.
