In the Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas, Texas, Seattle Orcas player Shehan Jayasuriya took a stunning catch during the closing stages of their MLC 2024 clash against the San Francisco Unicorns. It was however a mere consolation as the Orcas ended up losing the contest by six wickets with over five overs still remaining but one that demonstrated exceptional athleticism.
The Sri Lankan International fielded a short cover while the second last over from Harmeet Singh was being bowled by a left-arm spinner. The right-handed Sanjay Krishnamurthy attempted to play across the line against a wedged-out delivery.
Although not aiding the required elevation, this had been achieved through an acceptable connection by him thereby involving the fielder inside the ring. Jayasuriya leaped expansively to perfectly time and grab the ball out of the sky. The ball stuck to his far out right hand, giving the Orcas their third wicket this innings.

When batting, Shehan Jayasuriya was out of form, making 31 runs from 33 balls, at the beginning of the game, at the crease after both openers got out for the same score.

The Seattle Orcas have had a practically disappointing campaign, only winning in the first six matches played so far. This means that their elimination from the 2024 MLC was validated by the mammoth loss to SFU, the runner-ups in its inaugural season.
“Disappointing, we were in the final last year, this year we didn’t bat well, not a lot of firepower. The bowlers were good and did what best they could do. A bit under par, maybe 15-20 runs short and that cost us in the end. We’ve been poor in this season, disappointing for the franchise and the owners,” Orcas skipper Klaasen said after the loss to SFU.
Heinrich Klaasen led team struggled with several losses inflicting their recovery an overwhelming challenge. They remain with one game to play despite having exited and they will be playing Texas Super Kings on July 23.
Jayasuriya has had a relatively good campaign in the middle order. It can be argued that key to his tournament has been an unorthodox ramp shot off Haris Rauf in the reverse fixture against SFU earlier in the season.
