All-rounder Sherfane Rutherford showcased composure in a thrilling last over, guiding the Quetta Gladiators to a last-ball victory against the Karachi Kings in a 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL) match at the National Stadium in Karachi on Thursday, February 29.
After a commendable bowling performance, particularly Abrar Ahmed’s three-wicket haul that restricted Karachi Kings to a 166-run target, the Quetta Gladiators had a brisk start in their run chase. However, they faced a setback in the middle overs as Karachi Kings secured wickets in quick succession.
Under Rilee Rossouw’s captaincy, the team faced adversity, finding themselves at 89-5 in the 13th over. It was at this juncture that Sherfane Rutherford and his international teammate Akeal Hosein collaborated.
The pair played a crucial role in steering the game, bringing the equation down to requiring 15 runs off the last over. Rutherford shifted the game in favor of the Gladiators by hitting two consecutive sixes off Anwar Ali at the start of the over. However, Ali countered with consecutive yorkers.
The decisive moment occurred on the second-to-last delivery when Rutherford attempted a quick second run to keep the strike. Karachi Kings missed the run-out chance, leading to the scores being tied.
The Caribbean star concluded the match emphatically with a boundary on the last delivery, securing the points for Quetta Gladiators. Witness the thrilling final over right here:
