Talented youngster Shoaib Bashir was the star of the show as England beat West Indies by 241 runs in the second Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Sunday. It was his first five-wicket haul at international level and the young off-spinner returned 5-41 from 11.1 overs. The 20-year-old dismissed the last two batsmen when bowling out West Indies after they were set 385 to win; thereby making this his first time bowling against them.

England sent the visitors out for 143 runs only having played for 36.1 overs. In resuming the second innings of the opposition at 248-3, England scored 425 runs ending up due to 122 runs coming from Joe Root (off 178 balls) and Harry Brook hit 109 (off 132 balls). After that Bashir wrapped up West Indies’ batting line so easily.

The young man took the final two wickets in the game and finished with a total of five wickets, which he deserved. Amid another of the West Indies’ typical batting collapses, the experienced all-rounder Jason Holder was putting up a fight. Bashir got Holder for a flat and full delivery outside off that was turning in sharply to remove him for 37 from the crease.

Holder’s bat was beaten by the ball and it went between the gap it left. Fontaine wrapped up the game by dismissing Shamar Joseph who was the last wicket with just 8 runs added on the scoreboard. But as he tried to hit the ball hard later in an innings while it was bowled straight at him, he failed and got stumped.

The spinner earlier took out Kirk McKenzie (1), Kavem Hodge (0) and Alick Athanaze (1). McKenzie was caught behind as he tried to play a shot that went outside the off stump. Hodge, who had scored a century in the first innings, was given an lbw decision while aiming to hit one over the top but he completely missed it.

Meanwhile, McKenzie couldn’t read the spin, he just got an outside edge to slip, he could hardly do anything else. Even though Bashir emerged as the outstanding bowler for England, the fast bowlers also performed considerably well in the match. Meanwhile, Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson took two wickets each. On the other hand, Mark Wood registered one.

Bashir has had a remarkable beginning to his Test career

Somerset off-spinner Bashir who is just 20 has opened his test career on a high note making it count. In these five games, he has caught 24 people down so far (averaging 29.83 per game with 5 wickets).

The spinner had a great show in India during the earlier part of the year. He had a 3-138 in the first innings and 1-58 in the second innings, while playing in the second Test at Vizag. During the fourth Test of that series at Rajkot, he grabbed a bag of eight scalps going at 5-119 first and then 3-79 second.

The youngster, while playing at Dharamsala, took his second five-wicket haul in his short Test career with figures of 5-173 having bowled 46.1 overs. Yet, it was India that won the Test by an innings and 64 runs.
