New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel took his fourth wicket as Shubman Gill fell just short of a well-deserved century on Day 2 of the third Test against India in Mumbai. The 25-year-old was dismissed 10 runs shy of his hundred, which silenced the crowd.
The wicket came in the 54th over after lunch, when Ajaz bowled a flighted delivery outside off. Gill attempted to defend but edged the ball, which was brilliantly caught low by Daryl Mitchell at first slip.

Ajaz, who has faced challenges in the series, took on extra responsibility in this Test due to Mitchell Santner’s absence. The 36-year-old dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mohammed Siraj on Day 1, and followed up by getting Sarfaraz Khan and Shubman Gill on Day 2.
Shubman Gill was the top scorer as Team India secured a slight lead over New Zealand
The Punjab-born cricketer, with his 90 runs, was the top scorer for India, helping the team secure a narrow 28-run lead, bolstered by lower-order contributions from Washington Sundar (38*). His partnership of 96 with Rishabh Pant (60) was crucial in surpassing New Zealand’s total of 235.
On Day 1 of the final Test in Mumbai, New Zealand was all out for 235, with key half-centuries from Will Young (71) and Daryl Mitchell (82). India appeared to be in a strong position with only one wicket down but lost three wickets for just six runs, including Virat Kohli due to a chaotic run-out.
The Kiwis already have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series, having achieved decisive victories in Bengaluru and Pune. This marks their first series win in India and makes them the first team to defeat India in a home Test series since England in 2012.
