Indian opener Shubman Gill got out early in the ongoing warm-up match against Leicestershire on Thursday at the Grace Road in Leicester. He was caught by wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant for 21 runs off Will Davis’ bowling.

The four-day warm-up match is preparation for India ahead of the fifth rescheduled test match next month. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. He opened the innings along with Shubman Gill. The pacers got help early on in the innings.

India’s opening pair put on 35 runs before Shubman Gill got out. He nicked a delivery to wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant off fast bowler Will David. Gill managed 21 runs off 28 balls, including four boundaries.

After the fall of Shubman Gill’s wicket, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma too got out quickly. The Indian team failed to put up a partnership and was reduced to 81/5. Meanwhile, rain has stopped the play in Leicester. India is 133/5 with Virat Kohli and KS Bharat at the crease. Kohli has scored 32 runs off 60 balls, including four boundaries and a six, while KS Bharat is on 11 runs.

Shubman Gill to open with Rohit Sharma in the fifth test

Indian opener KL Rahul suffered a groin injury before the start of the T20I series against South Africa. He has been ruled out of the fifth rescheduled test match against England. In this absence, Shubman Gill is likely to open the innings for India along with skipper Rohit Sharma.

The 22-year-old has scored 119 runs in seven innings at an average of 19.83 in Test matches in England so far. He has a decent overall test record and will be keen to make an impact in the match.

The fifth test match will take place in Edgbaston, Birmingham starting from July 1, 2022. The Indian team is leading the five-match Test series 2-1.
