Veteran Australian batter Steve Smith was dismissed in one of the most unusual ways on Day 2 (Friday, December 27) of the Boxing Day Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Attempting a big shot, Smith’s inside edge deflected off his bat and body before gently rolling onto the stumps, dislodging a single bail.
The incident took place in the second over after Lunch when the 35-year-old stepped down the pitch to drive through extra cover. Instead, the ball caught the inside edge and trickled onto the stumps, leaving Smith helplessly watching the bail fall.
As Akash Deep celebrated his second wicket of the innings, the veteran batter, after a brilliant knock of 140, was left crouching in disbelief before walking back to the pavilion. You can watch the video here:

The right-arm seamer troubled Steve Smith multiple times during the previous Border-Gavaskar series 2024-25 Test at The Gabba in Brisbane, as well as on Day 1 at the MCG. The Bihar-born pacer also claimed Alex Carey’s wicket on the opening day in Melbourne.
Steve Smith surpasses Joe Root to achieve a unique milestone against India
The New South Welshman reached his 11th Test century against India, surpassing England’s Joe Root for the most hundreds in the format against the Men in Blue. Smith brought up his 34th Test ton with a glorious cover drive off Nitish Kumar Reddy, as the hosts solidified their position on the second morning of the fourth Test.
The vice-captain shared a partnership of over 100 runs with skipper Pat Cummins, who contributed a steady 49 before falling to Ravindra Jadeja. On Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test, Cummins won the toss and opted to bat, with the top three — Sam Konstas (60), Usman Khawaja (57), and Marnus Labuschagne (72) — all registering half-centuries.
India, however, fought back after Labuschagne’s dismissal, with Jasprit Bumrah removing Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh for low scores. Despite the setback, the hosts ended Day 1 in a strong position at 311/6.
