[WATCH]- Steve Smith Suffers A Momentary Lapse, Gifting His Wicket To Debutant Ben Sears In The First Over

In his Test debut, New Zealand’s Ben Sears made an impactful start by dismissing key Australian batsman Steve Smith with his third ball in the second Test in Christchurch.

Smith’s dismissal, attributed to a lapse in concentration, occurred with a good-length wobbled-seam ball at 140.7 kmph on the off-stump line. Despite Smith’s typical movement outside the off-stump, he intended to leave the delivery.

However, the delivery sharply returned after pitching, striking Steve Smith on the inner part of his back foot, leading the umpire to promptly declare him out. In a state of disbelief, Steve Smith opted for a review after discussing with Usman Khawaja.

Despite the impact being outside the off-stump, Smith’s decision not to play a shot became crucial. Ball-tracking indicated the ball would marginally clip the off-stump, leading to the on-field decision being confirmed, and Smith reluctantly walked off.

Ben Sears faced a significant moment as he stepped into the spotlight, feeling the weight of attention while replacing the widely admired Neil Wagner. Wagner’s retirement under controversial circumstances before the first Test added to the pressure on Sears.

Usman Khawaja joins Steve Smith in departing as New Zealand limits Australia to 32/2 during the drinks break

Steve Smith’s dismissal boosted New Zealand’s morale, lifting spirits that had sagged after being dismissed for 162 in the first innings. The partnership between Smith and Khawaja had created concerns.

Additionally, Matt Henry, who had been somewhat inconsistent, regained momentum. In the final ball before the drinks break, and likely the last of his spell, Henry had Khawaja play onto his leg stump. This success energized Henry and elicited an enthusiastic response from the crowd in Christchurch.
