Gujarat Titans (GT) openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill were sent back by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Tushar Deshpande, providing his team with much-needed relief after their tremendous partnership during an IPL 2024 encounter in Ahmedabad on Friday, May 10.
With their hundreds achieved, Gill and Sudharsan looked certain to give GT a strong finish. But Deshpande’s outstanding over saw both openers return to the shed after they gave up just four runs in the eighteenth over.
Bowling slower balls and cutters into the pitch was Tushar Deshpande’s strategy, and it proved to be very effective. In an attempt to smash the ball over mid-wicket, Sai Sudharsan reached out for one. But all he could do was toss it directly into Shivam Dube’s palms at close range.
After that, Shubman Gill tried to pull a shot off another cutter from Deshpande into the pitch, but he was only able to find Ravindra Jadeja at deep mid-wicket.
Shubman Gill returns to form with his fourth IPL hundred:
Shubman Gill, who was playing against CSK in Ahmedabad on Friday, May 10, came back to form at the bat and hit his fourth IPL hundred. Gill’s performance this season has fallen short of his IPL 2023 best when he amassed around 900 runs.
He will now be on the reserve list and will not be able to travel with the main squad to the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.
With a strike rate of 137.61 and an average of 32.30, Gill has amassed 322 runs in 11 games. Under Gill’s leadership, GT has struggled in the IPL 2024 season, and he only has two fifties to his name. It was a must-win matchup against CSK, and GT still has a slim chance of entering the playoffs.
GT’s backend scoring was severely impacted by the wickets of Gill (104 off 55) and Sudharsan (103 off 51), as they could only muster 22 runs in their final three overs, ultimately finishing at 231/3.
