Indian cricket saw two of its greatest heroes, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, submit farewell to T20Is because the team ensured the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy by victory over Australia in the final. Although Kohli’s form have been a problem all through the match, he switched in the final to deliver a match-prevailing performance.

Briefly after ending India’s 11-year wait for an ICC trophy, Kohli declared his retirement from T20I, accompanied by skipper Rohit Sharma making a similar statement after this. Both knew this would be their final presence in an India jersey in T20Is, no matter the outcome.

As the realization set in of what Rohit, Virat, and the Indian team had achieved together, there wasn’t a dry eye in Barbados. Even Rohit, overcome with emotion, hugged Kohli tightly as they both cried on this historic occasion. Here’s the video:

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma was seen lying down on the field soon after India clinched the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title as well.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from T20I cricket

Following the match, Kohli announced his retirement from T20I cricket. Rohit called Kohli’s innings “very crucial” and commended his contributions to the team over the years.

“Throughout the tournament, I think we were fantastic. Not me and nobody was in doubt with Virat’s form. We know the quality he has, he’s been on top of his game for 15 years, and come the occasion the big players will stand up.”

“Virat was holding that one end which was very crucial for us and the others played around him. For us to get to that total, it was a team effort. We wanted someone to bat as long as possible.”

“These are not wickets where you can come and bat freely and keep the scoreboard ticking straight away, so we do understand that. We wanted somebody to bat as long as possible and Virat did that perfectly. That’s where the experience of Virat comes through,” Rohit said in a post-match presentation.

The Indian captain credited the team’s World Cup victory to the outstanding efforts made during Rahul Dravid’s three-year leadership. Despite performing well, Rohit acknowledged that India had been under significant pressure, and winning the title in Barbados provided immense relief.
