New Zealand, confident from their ODI series win, put on an outstanding effort with the ball to take the morning session of the first Test at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. Opting to bowl first on a fairly green wicket, the tall and lanky debutant Kyle Jamieson made lives of the Indian batsmen difficult picking three of the first five wickets.
The 6ft 8 inches tall right-arm pacer impressed in the very first session of his Test career scalping the prized wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli. However, it was the veteran Tim Southee, who provided the initial breakthrough cleaning up Prithvi Shaw, who made a brisk start scoring 16 off 18 deliveries.
While Mayank Agarwal stood tall from one end, India kept losing wickets from the other end failing to stitch a partnership. Jamieson bowled a jaffer of delivery to Pujara, who had very less to do as the ball struck the top of the bat before flying to wicketkeeper BJ Watling. India’s No.3 batsman made a good starting playing 42 balls for his 11 runs but had to submit before the brilliance of the young pacer.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli’s nightmare once again returned since 2014 when James Anderson made him his bunny bowling the fourth stump in England. Debutant Kyle Jamieson bowled a fairly wide ball which kicked off from a length but didn’t do much. However, Kohli recalled some of the worst instincts from his old days and poked outside the off-stump to get a thick outside edge to first slip where Ross Taylor picked up a pressure catch to send the India skipper back in the hut for a paltry score of 2runs.
