[WATCH]- Washington Sundar Upset Over Reversed Caught-Behind In BGT 5th Test

Washington Sundar looked frustrated after his controversial dismissal on Day 1 of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney on Friday, January 3. The left-hander shook his head in disbelief as the TV umpire overturned the on-field umpire’s decision.

Sundar was batting confidently with 14 off 29 balls before being caught down the leg side on the next delivery. The dismissal occurred in the 66th over of India’s first innings. Australia captain Pat Cummins bowled a short ball, and Sundar attempted a shot but failed to connect cleanly.

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey collected the ball and appealed for a catch. The on-field umpire showed no interest, but Carey convinced Cummins to review. The TV umpire quickly reviewed the footage and declared Sundar out. You can watch the video here: (6:31)

“The third umpire fully justified”- Simon Taufel supports TV umpire’s call on Sundar’s dismissal

Former Australia umpire Simon Taufel defended the TV umpire’s call on Washington Sundar’s dismissal in the fifth Test, telling 7 Cricket:

“What Joel Wilson’s looking for here is that spike up to one frame past the glove, and he’s got that spike. There’s nothing else out there and the ball is underneath the glove.”

“The third umpire well and truly within his rights, according to the protocols, to determine that’s conclusive evidence for ball on glove,” he added.

Former ICC Elite umpire Simon Taufel, a five-time ICC Umpire of the Year (2004-2008), shared insights on the game where Australia ended Day 1 at 9/1. Bumrah removed Khawaja on the final ball, while India, batting first, were bowled out for 185.

Boland took four wickets, with Starc and Cummins claiming three and two, respectively. Rishabh Pant led with 40 off 98, while Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah contributed 26 and 22 runs, respectively.
