[WATCH]: “We Are Watching A Genius” – Sir Alastair Cook Responds As Joe Root Surpasses Him For The Most Test Centuries By An English Player

Sir Alastair Cook, who is a past captain of England, expressed his thoughts about Joe Root smashing his mark for the most Test hundreds meant for the nation. This former batter from Essex felt on commentary spot during the second encounter with Sri Lanka at Lord’s that this ex-captain was definitely the rightful person and greatest in England’s history.

Going into the Sri Lanka series, Root had a total of 32 centuries and required two more to exceed Cook. At Lord’s, the Yorkshire batter tied his past skipper’s record in the first innings before going ahead in the second one. In addition, this 33-year-old man made his seventh Test century at Lord’s.

Speaking on commentary for the BBC Test Match Special, the 39-year-old further stated:

“He is quite simply England’s greatest. And it’s absolutely right that he should have the record on his own. Take it in Joe, we are watching a genius.”

It was also one who opened bats for opening that Root debuted for Tests in 2012 amidst England’s famous Indian soil series victory. In addition, he is also knocking on Cook’s door for Most Test runs record in England.

I called it when he was on about 6 today, that he was going to get 100. I know he’s in great form, but it’s just a pleasure to watch a master, a craftsman at work.”

Eventually, England set Sri Lanka a target of 483 runs to win the match with tourists needing a world record chase to make series equal.
