Yuzvendra Chahal Picks Up His 200th IPL Wicket In The RR vs MI Match

Rajasthan Royals (RR) spinner Yuzvendra Chahal made history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by becoming the first bowler to reach the 200-wicket milestone. The leg-spinner achieved this feat by dismissing Mumbai Indians’ (MI) all-rounder Mohammad Nabi with a soft dismissal at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Monday.

Chahal was stuck on 199 wickets after removing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer in a high-scoring match at Eden Gardens recently. He was brought into the attack in the eighth over and only needed three deliveries to secure his 200th IPL wicket.

The leg-spinner delivered a flighted ball after a promising start to the over. Nabi attempted to flick it towards the leg side but only managed to get a thick leading edge. Yuzvendra Chahal moved a couple of steps to his left after his follow-through and easily completed the catch.

Immediately, he sank to his knees in celebration of the wicket, with both hands raised upward and his eyes closed.

Yuzvendra Chahal debuted in the IPL during the 2013 season for the Mumbai Indians (MI) but gained prominence through a successful period with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Yuzvendra Chahal reached the 200-wicket milestone in just 68 matches after achieving the 100-wicket mark

It took the leg-spinner six years to achieve the 100-wicket milestone, but he swiftly doubled his tally in just four years. Chahal surpassed notable names like Lasith Malinga and Dwayne Bravo to reach this landmark. During the 2023 IPL season, he became the leading wicket-taker after dismissing Nitish Rana in a match against KKR at Eden Gardens.

Chahal is also competing for the Purple Cap in the 2024 edition. He currently shares the top spot with Jasprit Bumrah, both having taken 13 wickets in eight matches. However, the cap’s ownership could change as MI and RR are currently playing against each other in Jaipur.

It’s uncertain whether Chahal’s impressive performance record will boost his chances for a spot in Team India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad. He’s been steady all season and can step up his performance in the second half, just like he’s done before.
