The head coach of Afghanistan’s cricket team, Jonathan Trott, gave some context to their team’s poor performance by indicating that they could have bowled slightly better after holding their own for much of the T20 World Cup 2024 match against the West Indies at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium.
The Player of the Match easily went to the West Indies hitter named Nicholas Pooran for his splendid show in the initial over. In each of the 53 balls, 98 runs are for the team at his high strike rate of 184 with the team ball. 91. He had left-handed batting; he struck eight times when the ball went to the boundary; at least six of them went for six and six others went for fours.
During the post-match press conference, Trott praised Pooran’s performance, saying he had a solid inning. Their power play in the first inning was not optimal, the head coach continued.
“Pooran played a very good innings. Maybe, I think, we could have bowled a little bit better at times; obviously, the power play wasn’t ideal, but I think we bowled well after that. The next turnovers went for something like 60 odd so it showed that if we did bowl well, we could restrict them and yeah so there are some things that we did well but there’s some things that we didn’t,” Trott said.
“West Indies players use the wind factor well”- Jonathan Trott
Jonathan Trott, the head coach of Afghanistan‘s cricket team, noted that the Caribbeans made excellent use of the wind during the championship event’s last group stage. Trott hoped that they would receive supplies for their next game.
“I think we saw the West Indies players use the wind factor well. The wind was to the bigger, much bigger boundary, and we’re still able to clear it well. I think maybe we could have bowled a little bit better and gotten them to hit in the other direction,” Jonathan Trott said.
“When we knew it, they were trying to target the wind. And that’s going to be key also going into Barbados with the wind there and that’s something we’re certainly going to look at and hopefully get right,” Jonathan Trott added.
In the game that was played at the Daren Sammy National Stadium in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, Afghanistan was soundly defeated by a margin of 104 runs, although Nicholas Pooran produced an amazing knock of 98, which came off 53 balls.
