Delhi Capitals (DC) assistant coach Shane Watson has stressed that they need to play well consistently for 40 overs to keep themselves in the hunt for the playoffs. The Capitals are currently placed seventh in the points table and need to pull their socks up as IPL 2022 approaches its business end.

Rishabh Pant and Co. have played some good cricket in the competition but have lost the plots in the final few overs. In their game against Punjab Kings, they produced an all-round effort to trump their opponents. They also had a good game against Rajasthan Royals but a no-ball controversy marred their chances of going over the line.

Shane Watson stressed they need to play consistently well to make it to the finals. The former Australian all-rounder admitted the squad has the capabilities to do that and they need to harness that and bring out the best. Speaking in a video shared by the franchise, Watson said:

“For us to get into the Final, we have to be consistently playing at our best for the whole 40 overs, not just 35 or 36 overs. We know we can do that. So, definitely, the most exciting thing is that we have got the incredible skill and incredible talent within our group. We just got to harness that and bring that together for the next seven games.”

Delhi Capitals will lock horns with Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday as both teams look to keep themselves afloat for a place in the playoffs.

“He has got incredible power” – Shane Watson on Rovman Powell

Watson also lavished praise on power-hitter Rovman Powell, who smashed three sixes in the first three balls of the final over in Delhi Capitals’ previous match against Rajasthan Royals. Unfortunately, a no-ball controversey and the turn of events that unfolded broke his concentration and Delhi lost track.

“It’s exciting for Rovman and for Delhi Capitals as well. He has got incredible power, he has got incredible skills and he has shown this on the international stage for West Indies a number of times. We all knew that it was just a matter of time when he was going to put it all together in a game and in the situation that arose for him. He was ready to take it on. And, he got us very close but unfortunately not close enough. But, it is exciting to see him put that all together, and that’s going to give him a lot of confidence going into the back end of the tournament,” Watson concluded.

The West Indian all-rounder has managed only 67 runs in seven matches at an average of just over 10. He will look to justify his selection in the coming games to stake a claim in the playing XI.
