India started their Test series against Australia in style, clinching a massive 295-run victory in Perth. While the match saw its share of ups and downs, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brilliant 161 in the second innings and Virat Kohli’s return to form with an unbeaten 100 were the standout performances. Captain Jasprit Bumrah’s tactical acumen and leadership shone brightly as India dismantled Australia in their chase.

India’s Performance in the First Test

The match began on a challenging note for India as they were bowled out for just 150 in their first innings. The Australian pacers exploited the conditions expertly, leaving the visitors reeling. However, India made a strong comeback with the ball, restricting Australia’s lead and setting the stage for a remarkable second innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young sensation, delivered what is being hailed as one of his finest innings in Test cricket. Scoring 161, Jaiswal showcased exceptional patience and technique, leaving the ball judiciously and punishing loose deliveries with finesse.

“Out of all these innings, he [Jaiswal] had a great start to his career,” Bumrah told the host broadcaster. “But the way he played in the last innings was probably his best Test innings so far because he left the ball. He has an attacking nature, but he left the ball well and played long. That really helped us.”

Virat Kohli’s Stunning Century

Virat Kohli silenced his critics with a masterful unbeaten century. Coming off a string of low scores, Kohli’s knock was a testament to his resilience and experience. His 143-ball innings not only steadied the Indian ship but also set a daunting target for Australia.

“Virat doesn’t need us; we need him,” Bumrah said, emphasizing Kohli’s pivotal role in the team’s success. The century was a crucial confidence booster for the seasoned batter, reminding everyone of his class and pedigree.

“I have said this before, Virat Kohli doesn’t need us, we need him,” Bumrah said at the press conference. “He is an experienced player. This is his fourth or fifth tour. So he knows his cricket better than anyone else. He looked in good shape, he was mentally switched on. Sometimes when you have such a long career, you bat in tough conditions and he has batted in tough scenarios for a long time, but it’s difficult to do that all the time in every match.

“But he looked to be in a good space and obviously, he got a good delivery in the first innings, but he was still in a great space, and he capitalised in the second innings. We needed an experienced batter then. He also played well, and helped his partners play well as well. So obviously, when he gets confidence at the start of the series, you can’t ask for more than that.”

India’s Bowling Brilliance

Bumrah led from the front with the ball, delivering a spell of disciplined aggression that stifled Australia’s batters. Backed by a cohesive bowling unit, India dismantled Australia’s lineup, showcasing the depth and variety in their attack.

The Indian team’s first-innings struggles served as a wake-up call. Bumrah’s leadership in rallying the team was pivotal, with players focusing on trusting their processes and abilities. The second innings proved that India had learned from their mistakes, coming back stronger and more determined.
