In the recent IPL 2025 auction, many players earned big contracts, but Prithvi Shaw did not catch the attention of any teams. Once seen as a promising player in Indian cricket, Shaw has struggled due to his issues with fitness, performance, and off-field problems.
The right-hander has frequently made headlines for the wrong reasons and has seen such a decline that he has even been dropped from Mumbai’s domestic squad on multiple occasions.
While Prithvi Shaw’s talent is undeniable, it alone is not enough to ensure success in today’s game. Mumbai captain and IPL 2025’s second-most expensive player, Shreyas Iyer, described Shaw as a God-gifted cricketer but emphasized the need for him to improve his work ethic.
“I think, personally, he is a God-gifted player. The amount of talent he possesses as an individual, no one has it. That’s true. It’s just that he needs to improve his work ethics,” Shreyas Iyer was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Despite his immense talent, Iyer mentioned that Shaw is the only one who can overcome this challenging phase by finding a way to help himself.
“And I have said it before as well in many of the interviews. He needs to get his work ethics right. And if he does that, you know, sky is the limit for him. Can you force him to? I can’t force him. He has played so much of cricket. And everyone has given him inputs. At the end of the day, it’s his job to go out there and figure out things for himself,” Iyer said.
Additionally, the Mumbai captain made a comment that may seem harsh but is justified. He stated that Shaw had found solutions before and needed to do so once more. He emphasized that no one can force him to take action and that, as a professional player, Shaw must understand what he needs to do.
“We can’t babysit anyone, right? Every professional who is playing at this level, they need to know what they should be doing. And he has also done it in the past. It’s not that he hasn’t. He has to focus. He has to sit back, put a thinking cap on and then figure out himself. He will get the answer. No one can force him to do anything,” Shreyas concluded.
Prithvi Shaw’s disappointing performance in the 2024 season has stalled his progress
Shaw has continued to face struggles throughout the 2024 season. He played four Ranji Trophy matches, managing only 59 runs. In the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, his performance remained lackluster, scoring 197 runs at an average of 21.88.
Apart from a 26-ball 49 in the quarterfinal, Shaw failed to deliver any notable performances. In the last two games, he could only manage 8 and 10 runs, failing to make a significant impact in Mumbai’s victory.
