Shannon Gabriel, a fast bowler from the West Indies, announced his retirement from international cricket after a career of twelve years that saw him play 86 games for his nation. The 36-year-old shared this announcement through his Instagram page where he reflected on his journey expressing gratitude for everything he has had to offer.

In terms of test matches, compounded together out of 86 matches played by Gabriel, 59 can be termed as being the most prominent ones in which Gabriel performed greatly.

Lord’s marked the place where gabrial made hs debut back in 2012 becoming an important figure within the West Indian pacemen’s group. During his test career duration he got 166 scalps with an average figure standing at 32 .21 including six five-wicket hauls.

“During the past 12 years, I have dedicated myself to playing international cricket for the West Indies,” Gabriel wrote. “Playing this beloved game at the highest level has brought me immense joy, but as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.”

Against Sri Lanka, in June 2018 his top performance came up as he had a match figure of 13 for 121 which ranks fourth among all bowlers from the western part. His last Test match appearance was against India held at Port of Spain during the year 2023.

In his retirement message, Gabriel expressed his deep appreciation for those who supported him throughout his career. “I would like to express my gratitude to God for the numerous blessings and the opportunities my family and I have received during my time playing for the West Indies,” he said.

“Secondly, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Cricket West Indies administrators, coaches, and staff members. Words cannot adequately convey the appreciation I have for your hard work and support over the years. Last but not least, I am grateful to my teammates and all those who have stood by me and supported me along the way. You have made my journey to the top truly special.”

He further shared what he hoped to do in future, revealing at the same time that he plans to play cricket still at the local level in Trinidad and Tobago and also for various other clubs and franchises across the globe.

Gabriel’s career will be best remembered for his contributions as a quintessential West Indian fast bowler but not without certain hitches. One such incident was in 2017 when he was out bowled by Yasir Shah during a test against Pakistan in Dominica with only seven balls left to save the match from being lost.

In 2019, he faced additional controversy when he incurred a four-match ban from ODIs due to making homophobic remarks towards England captain Joe Root while they were having an argument in Saint Lucia.
