Jayasuriya’s speciality was left-arm spinner while he was a destructive left-handed opening batsman. While in ODIs, he went on to score 13,430 runs with 28 tubes and a hundred, in Test, he scored 6,973 runs out of which fourteen were hundred.

Jayasuriya was nick-named ‘Matara Mauler’ due to his forceful attacking attitude in his batting. As a competent bowling all-rounder, he took 323 one-day international wickets as well as 98 Test wickets. Although he played only a few ODIs, his great knock of 84 not out in the final helped Sri Lanka win the 1996 World Cup: he was subsequently awarded the 1996 ICC Cricketer of the Year.
