After Rohit Sharma led Team India to victory in the T20 World Cup last month, former captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly responded to his critics. While Ganguly’s agreement as BCCI president, Virat Kohli was demoted as captain for short-overs cricket in 2021, in the wake of resignation as test captain.

Ganguly met considerable criticism then, with many pointing him for Kohli’s captaincy changes. Rohit took over as captain across formats at that time. Ganguly initially stated that the captaincy decision was made in consultation with Kohli. However, Kohli disputed this, claiming he was forced out as ODI captain.

Ganguly later clarified that the board aimed for a single captain in white-ball cricket, leading to Kohli’s removal as ODI captain after he resigned from T20I captaincy.

With Rohit Sharma excelling as captain across all formats, Sourav Ganguly has seized the moment to respond to his critics who had questioned his decision to change the captaincy three years ago.

The former captain of team India highlighted that during the cricketing community rejoices Team India’s win during the 2024 T20 World Cup beneath Rohit’s guidance, few recollect that he was the one who assigned Rohit as captain at first.

“When I handed Rohit Sharma the captaincy of the Indian team, everyone criticised me. Now that India has won the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, everyone has stopped abusing me for it. In fact, I think everyone has forgotten that it was I who appointed him as the captain of the Indian team,” Sourav Ganguly told Ajkaal.

Rohit Sharma has enjoyed notable success as captain across various formats in recent years. He led India to the final of the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup last year, marking India’s first appearance in the ODI World Cup final since 2011. Additionally, Team India secured victory in the Asia Cup during the same period.

In the past month, Rohit guided the team to a triumphant victory in the T20 World Cup, ending India’s 11-year drought for an ICC trophy. Following this achievement, Rohit announced his retirement from the T20I format, paving the way for a new captain in that format for India soon.
