Playing as a right-handed batsman, Nissanka began his International career in March 2021 when he faced the West Indies team in a one-day game. He became the first player from Sri Lanka to score two centuries in one-day international cricket (ODIs). Furthermore, he registered the highest individual score (210*) for Srilanka in ODIs.

He has represented Baduriya Sports Club in a single T20 match in the SLC T20 tournament, which was held in the season 2017/2018. Nissanka is one of the best-performing batsmen for Nondescripts Cricket Club, attaining his 1,000th run during the 2018-19 Premier League Tournament.
Nissanka was initially called up to the international team in March 2021. He played his first Test match against the West Indies on March 21, 2003, scoring 91 in the first innings and 103 in the second innings, becoming the fourth Sri Lankan to make a century in the debut match.
His extensive list A debut came on March 10, 2021. Cross to 2023, he had featured in 9 Test innings, 537 Test runs, 55 one-day international matches, 2225 ODI International runs and a scoring average of 44.50. He has also had 1360 T20I runs in 52 T20I innings.
Lankan Premier League teams have included Nissanka with the Colombo Stars and the Kandy Falcons.
