During the match between India and Sri Lanka, Indian players had a black band on them dedicating it to the former Indian player Anshuman Gaikwad who died recently. The right-handed opener Gaikwad played in 40 Test matches and 15 One-Day Internationals for India from 1975 to 1985.
He was seventy-one years of age when he passed away. It was an act of honour and support to his family who are currently mourning the great cricketer. The black armbands that they wore were for showing respect as well as sorrow. Mohammed Siraj provided India with their first breakthrough when he bowled Avishka Fernando with just one wicket taken at the start of his over.
Pathum Nissanka has now partnered with Kusal Mendis trying to build a solid partnership for Sri Lanka here. But men like Mohammed Siraj or Arshdeep Singh are aiming at quickly getting some Indian wickets. On Friday in Colombo, Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to bat in the first One Day International (ODI) of a three-match series against India.
Playing XI after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win will be captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli making their debut match since India’s victory in T20 World Cup 2024. With Rishabh Pant sitting out the game, KL Rahul has also been chosen in the team who will take over as wicketkeeper.
Former Indian Cricketer and Coach Anshuman Gaekwad Passes Away:
One of the most respected figures in cricket died on July 31, 2024, when Anshuman Gaekwad (then 71) passed away. With his battle with blood cancer finally over, the former Indian cricket player and coach succumbed to the terminal disease. Thus Indian cricket enters a new phase after this. As a player, coach and administrator he left behind a legacy that spanned decades.
It is evident that right to the days prior to his death, Gaekwad had the will to fight blood cancer. Before relocating to his birth place Vadodara, Gujarat, he was undergoing treatment at the King’s College London, England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had come forward to support the legendary cricket player in his medical expenses that were incurred in London and thus it revealed the extent to which the game revered him.
