In-form New Zealand cricketer Will Young revealed how he planned to deal with India’s Ravindra Jadeja during the third Test of the series in Mumbai. Young was crucial during the historic NZ series when they registered their first-ever Test series victory against India on Indian soil with a 3-0 clean sweep.
Player of the Series Young unveiled how he managed to counter Jadeja’s spin. In the Third Test, he batted well, scoring 71 and 51 and ensuring New Zealand remained competitive. Young’s input greatly helped in the acquisition of the series sweep.
It was the first Test series New Zealand won in India—by a score of 0-3. Young made a worthy performance, became an all-rounder, and contributed a lot to his team; thus, he was honored as the Player of the Series. With the brave victory over Jadeja’s challenge to the Kiwi batsmen, Young proved that he could gain success in testing circumstances that the Kiwi team is sure to include in their future lineup.
“He was quite comfortable for the right-handers”- Will Young
Will Young of New Zealand described how he dealt with Ravindra Jadeja’s threat during the third Test against India at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
“It was just this one particular passage of play [in Mumbai] where Jadeja had brought mid-off up. Most of the series he’d had him back because he was quite comfortable for the right-handers to try to push the ball into the off side and bring the slips into play. But this particular passage of play, Jadeja and Rohit had decided to bring mid-off up,” Young was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
“And I just felt that if the ball was full enough, I could try to reach it and smother the spin and get it over the top straight. And I had a chat to Daryl Mitchell about it in between overs and he said, ‘Yeah, mate, just back yourself’. He said make sure you stay down through the shot or something along those lines. He’s obviously very good at it [hitting down the ground] himself. So when the opportunity arose, I took it and then the fielder went back, and I could keep on playing from there,” he added.
Young finished as the series’ third-highest run scorer, with 244 runs from three matches at an average of 48.80, including two fifties.
