“Winning Runs. Talismanic Innings. World Champion.” – Twitter reacts to Ben Stokes’ Match-Winning Knock In T20 World Cup Final

Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes played a match-winning knock in the T20 World Cup final.

England won the T20 World Cup after 12 years and joined the West Indies to become two-time T20 champions. They also achieved the historic feat of becoming the only team to win both the World Cups (2019 and 2022) in the same cycle.

When the big occasions arise for England then this man always rises to the occasion, Ben Stokes. Whether it was Lords (2019), Headingley (2019) and now add Melbourne (2022), it has been redemption for Stokes.

After being smashed for four maximums in 2016 by Carlos Braithwaite to score the winning runs for England has truly been a journey. Like they say before successes there are setbacks. Stokes scored his maiden T20I half-century in this match versus Pakistan. He scored an unbeaten 52 off 49 balls, which consisted of five fours and a maximum.

Several criticised the selection of Ben Stokes initially in the squad given the little experience he has of playing T20Is but Jos Buttler backed his selection by saying that he wants him for the big occasions. He has surely stood up to his role by stepping up in the big matches whether it was the must-win game versus Sri Lanka or today in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Fans showered praise on Ben Stokes for winning the T20 World Cup for his side. Let’s look at some Twitter reactions:

England win T20 World Cup for the 2nd time

Pakistan scored 137/8 in their innings while England chased down the target with an over to spare. Ben Stokes remained not out at 52. Unfortunately, during the middle of the game Pakistan’s star bowler, Shaheen Shah Afridi had to leave the field and was unable to finish his quota of overs.

Amidst the bowlers, Haris Rauf stood up for the team picking two wickets. For England Sam Curran, the player of the match and tournament, picked up three wickets today in his quota of overs.
