Senior wicket-keeper batter Wriddhiman Saha has been at the heart of criticism this year. From his rift with journalist Boria Majumdar to leaking details about his conversations with the BCCI President to not playing for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy group stages, Saha has been making the headlines for quite some time now.
However, the 37-year-old year was named in the 22-member squad for the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal, scheduled to commence on June 6. But the cricketer has refused to represent Bengal further and has communicated his stance to CAB President Abhishek Dalmiya.
Incidentally, Dalmiya tried to convince him when the celebrated cricketer was in the city with Gujarat Titans (GT) squad for the IPL 2022 Qualifier, but the cricketer refused to turn up for Bengal in the knockouts.
“The Cricket Association of Bengal wanted Wriddhiman Saha to play for Bengal at this crucial juncture especially when Bengal would be fighting in the Knockout stage in a bid to win the Ranji Trophy after becoming the top-ranked team in the country at the end of the Group Stage,” Dalmiya was quoted saying in a press release.
“I had expressed this to Wriddhiman and had requested him to reconsider his decision. However, Wriddhiman has now communicated to us that he is not willing to play the Ranji knockouts,” he added.
It began in February, with a quote from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint secretary Debabrata Das, where he accused Wriddhiman Saha of giving “all sorts of excuses” to “skip” Ranji matches. Saha’s wife, Romi, said he had been hurt by how the CAB handled the celebrated cricketer’s decision.
