Team India batter Shubman Gill was dismissed in a controversial manner against Australia on day four of the World Test Championship final at The Kennington Oval in London. He was caught by Cameron Green off Scott Boland during the third innings of the match. However, there were doubts raised over the dismissal.
Chasing a mammoth 444 runs, Indian openers, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma were going great guns. They scored 41 runs off the first seven overs. In the eighth over, Scott Boland bowled a good length delivery around the off-stump. Shubman Gill got forwards to defend the delivery. However, the ball took off and caught the shoulder of the bat. Cameron Green, who was at the gully, dived to take a brilliant catch. The on-field umpires referred the catch to the third umpire, who gave it out.

The fans were not happy with the decision as in several frames the ball seemed to have touched the ground. Former cricketer Ricky Ponting who was on the air questioned,
“The ball went into his hand may be 6-8inches above the ground but the question I have got was did any part of the ball touch the ground just after it completed the catch? I am sure that’s what Rohit Sharma is arguing with the umpires; I am sure that’s why Shubman Gill is so disappointed.”
“It had carried, six-eight inches above the ground; no doubt about that but did it then actually roll over and touch the top of the surface?,” he added.
Let’s take a look at the reaction of the fans:
Such a shameful act – Cameron Green & Aus – Grow up and Live up to Sportsmanship!
What's 3rd umpire has done ?
Ball clearly touched the ground and hand was not below it. 🤔Gill was not out!#WTCFinal #INDvsAUS @ICC @BCCI @ShubmanGill pic.twitter.com/NkhJMZB2SX

Great catch by Cameron Green. The umpires look to see if there are fingers under the ball and the fielder has control of the ball during and immediately after catching the ball. It isn’t about whether half a blade of grass has touched the ball..#WTCFinal

Very difficult for the third umpire to be sure about such catches as all the angles are in 2 dimensions. Terrific effort from #CameronGreen #WTC2023Final
