Ravindra Jadeja, an all-rounder for India, made history on Friday by surpassing Bishan Singh Bedi to become the nation’s most successful left-arm spinner in Test cricket history.
This was achieved by Jadeja during India’s match against Australia in the ICC World Test Championship final at The Oval. Steve Smith (34) and Travis Head (18) both reached century status in Australia’s second innings, but Jadeja ended their innings. Jadeja finished the day with stats of 2/25 in nine overs.
Jadeja has now taken 267 wickets in 65 Test matches for an average of 24.25 and an economy rate of 24.4. In 67 games, Bishan Singh Bedi has taken 266 wickets.
Jadeja is the fourth-most successful left arm-spinner overall in Tests. He trails Englishman Derek Underwood (297 wickets in 86 games), Daniel Vettori (362 in 113 games), and Rangana Herath (433 in 93 games) of Sri Lanka.
In the longer format in 2023, the all-arounder has been in incredible form. He has scored 183 runs at an average of 30.50 in five games. With a top score of 70, he has scored a half-century. Additionally, he has taken 25 wickets at a 19/84 average and a 2/63 economy rate. His 7/42 inning bowling average for the year is his best.
In eight games and nine innings of international cricket in 2023, Jadeja scored 262 runs at an average of 32.75, including one half-century. Additionally, in eight games, he has taken 27 wickets for an average of 21.33 and a 2.78 economy rate.
With regard to the match, Australia is 123/4 at the end of day three, led by Cameron Green (7*) and Marnus Labuschagne (41*), both of whom are unbeaten.
By 296 runs, they are ahead of India. Siraj and Umesh Yadav sent Usman Khawaja (13) and David Warner (1) early, while Ravindra Jadeja (2/25) removed innings centurions Steve Smith (34) and Travis Head (18) from previous innings.
India was shut out for 296 runs in their opening inning. India was 173 runs behind Australia after their first innings, which saw them score 469 runs.
India’s top order failed in their first innings, but contributions from comeback kid Ajinkya Rahane (89 in 129 balls, 11 fours and a six), Shardul Thakur (51 in 109 balls with six fours), and Ravindra Jadeja (48 in 51 balls with seven fours and a six) helped India fight back after being held to 71/4.
Among the wickets taken by Australia were those of Pat Cummins (3/83), Nathan Lyon (2/19), Cameron Green (2/44), Scott Boland (2/59), and Mitchell Starc (2/71).
The majority of Australia’s 469 runs in the first innings came from centuries by Travis Head (163 in 174 balls, 25 fours, and a six) and Steve Smith (121 in 268 balls, 19 fours).
In the opening inning, Siraj (4/108) had India’s best bowling performance. Jadeja only took one wicket, while Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur each took two.
