Arjuna Ranatunga, a name revered in Sri Lanka for captaining the national team to its historic 1996 Cricket World Cup victory, now finds himself at the center of a legal storm far removed from the cricket field. The 62-year-old former left-handed batsman, who led Sri Lanka to its first and only ODI World Cup title and later served in various political roles including as petroleum minister, is facing serious corruption allegations.
Ranatunga’s popularity as a sports icon elevated him into public office, but recent developments suggest his political career may now be overshadowed by a high-profile legal case.
Allegations and Legal Proceedings
Sri Lankan authorities, through the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), have informed a Colombo court that Ranatunga is a suspect in a corruption case linked to fuel procurement practices during his tenure as petroleum minister. The watchdog alleges that Ranatunga and his elder brother, Dhammika Ranatunga — who was then chairman of the state-owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) — deviated from established procedures for awarding long-term oil supply contracts.
Instead, they are accused of approving spot purchases at significantly higher prices, which the commission says resulted in substantial financial losses for the government. According to reports, the 27 spot deals executed in 2017 are estimated to have cost the state nearly 800 million Sri Lankan rupees (roughly Rs 23.5 crore / about US $5 million at the time).
Although the court was notified of the intention to arrest Ranatunga on these charges, authorities have yet to take him into custody because he is currently overseas. The court was informed that he will be arrested upon his return to Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Dhammika was briefly detained but later released on bail, with a travel ban imposed. The next scheduled hearing in the matter is set for March 13, 2026.
Political and Public Context
The case against Ranatunga is part of a broader anti-corruption initiative pursued by the government of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, which came into power in 2024 with promises to tackle entrenched corruption.
This crackdown has seen several prominent figures come under scrutiny, including Ranatunga’s own family members; another brother, Prasanna Ranatunga, a former tourism minister, was previously arrested on separate charges related to insurance fraud and extortion, and is serving a suspended sentence. The unfolding legal battle involving a national sporting legend turned politician has drawn widespread attention, raising questions about political accountability and governance in Sri Lanka.
