Several skillful players will be available for franchises in the upcoming 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction. This marks the first instance of the event being held overseas since its inception, with Dubai scheduled to host on December 19.
Prior to the auction, the IPL unveiled the official roster of players set to be auctioned. A sum of 333 players has registered, comprising 214 Indians and 119 overseas players. The franchises had already submitted their lists of retained and released players on November 26.
In the auction, homegrown players are highly coveted, forming the majority of the squad. Indian players, whether capped or uncapped, will consistently be sought after, and determining their base price can be challenging given the dynamics of the auction.
Three Indian players who might have set a higher base price for the IPL 2024 Auction:
#3 Shivam Mavi
Shivam Mavi’s career in 2023 has taken an unexpected turn. Following a lackluster 2022 season with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where he played only six matches and took five wickets at an economy rate of 10.32, he was released by the team.
However, the Gujarat Titans (GT) acquired him for a substantial ₹6 crore during the IPL 2023 mini-auction, subsequently earning him his first call-up to the national team.
Starting the year impressively with a remarkable 4-22 spell in his international debut against Sri Lanka, Mavi seemed set for a significant role in GT’s title defense in IPL 2023.
Despite expectations, he surprisingly did not feature in any matches during the season and has now been released by the franchise. However, in an interesting turn, Mavi may have undervalued himself by setting a base price of only ₹50 lakh as he re-enters the auction pool.
#2 Shahrukh Khan
Pinch hitters are greatly prized in the league, yet teams expect immediate impact from such players. Shahrukh Khan entered the IPL 2022 mega-auction as one of the most coveted players and was acquired by the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for an impressive ₹9 crore.
Unfortunately, his tenure with the franchise did not meet expectations, with only 273 runs scored in 21 matches. The Punjab Kings, reaching the limit of their patience, eventually released the Tamil Nadu star to free up their budget.
Despite facing challenges in the IPL, Shahrukh Khan has remained a reliable performer in domestic cricket, particularly showcasing his prowess in the death overs. Similar to Mavi, he might have underestimated his potential contribution to franchises by setting a modest base price of just ₹40 lakh.
#1 Kartik Tyagi
The young fast bowler had a positive beginning to his career post the 2018 U-19 World Cup. He delivered strong performances with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) during his early years before transferring to the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) after a couple of seasons.
Kartik Tyagi, despite high expectations at SRH under coach Dale Steyn, had limited chances and underwhelming performances, featuring in only five matches since 2022 with two wickets and a poor economy rate. He ranked below T Natarajan and Umran Malik in the team’s hierarchy.
Tyagi, with a chance for a new beginning, attracts attention from franchises due to his success in the Vijay Hazare campaign. Despite being one of the top uncapped Indian pacers, he has set a humble base price of ₹20 lakh, indicating a cautious approach.
