India will host New Zealand for a white-ball tour featuring multiple formats in January 2026. The schedule includes a three-match ODI series followed by five T20Is, running from January 11 to January 31. While New Zealand have already named their squads for both formats, India are yet to announce theirs.
The Men in Blue will head into the series after clinching a 2-1 ODI series win over South Africa at home, along with a 3-1 victory in the T20Is. New Zealand, meanwhile, come in after defeating the West Indies in both ODIs and T20Is on home soil. The five-match T20I series holds added significance, serving as the final build-up for both sides ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, which begins in February.
Here are three reasons India should not pick Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah for the ODIs against New Zealand:
#1 Chance for India to try out other ODI talents
New Zealand are not fielding a full-strength side for the ODI series against India, with several regular and high-profile players missing. The squad will be led by Michael Bracewell and features names such as Devon Conway, Adi Ashok, Kristian Clarke, Josh Clarkson, Zak Foulkes, Mitch Hay, Kyle Jamieson, Nick Kelly, Jayden Lennox, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Glenn Phillips, Will Young and Michael Rae.
With the visitors opting for a relatively inexperienced lineup, the series presents a valuable chance for India to rest key players like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. It also offers an ideal platform to try out youngsters and emerging talents at the international level, while helping the team identify and develop long-term replacements for senior players.
#2 Chance for India to try out new ODI talent
The 2026 T20 World Cup is scheduled to start in February 2026, shortly after the New Zealand tour. India are set to play eight matches against the Kiwis before the global event, making it crucial for key players like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah to stay fully fit ahead of the tournament. Given that New Zealand are not sending a full-strength ODI side, India can afford to give both players a break.
With the ODIs scheduled before the five T20Is, the team management would want to avoid overloading Hardik and Bumrah across all eight games to reduce the risk of injuries or fitness issues. The two senior stars could even be rested for some of the T20Is and managed carefully to ensure they are fresh and ready for the World Cup.
#3 Chance for India to try out new players in ODIs
Hardik Pandya returned after recovering from an injury sustained late in the Asia Cup 2025, having been rested for the South Africa ODIs before making his comeback in the T20Is once fully fit. Ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah missed the 2025 Champions Trophy with a lower back injury, played only three Tests in England, and was rested for the South Africa ODIs.
With both players having dealt with injuries in 2025, managing their workload has become a top priority for Team India. The Men in Blue have adopted a cautious approach to preserve these match-winners for the 2026 T20 World Cup, evident from Bumrah being utilised mainly in the shorter format, including the Asia Cup and the South Africa T20I series.
