4 Achievements That Stood Out In The 2nd ODI Despite India’s Series Loss

Team India’s senior batter Rohit Sharma staged a determined comeback in the second ODI against Australia at Adelaide on Thursday, October 23. Even though he crafted a gritty half-century under pressure, his effort failed to change the outcome as India once again ended up on the losing side. Opting to bat first, India managed 264/9 in their quota of 50 oovers

Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer both struck fifties, scoring 73 and 61 respectively. Further down the order, Axar Patel chipped in with a handy 44 while Harshit Rana added an unbeaten 24 to push the total forward. The contest did tilt slightly India’s way towards the finish, but the total on board fell short as Australia chased the target in 46.2 overs with two wickets to spare.

For India, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and Washington Sundar claimed two wickets apiece. With this heartbreak, India surrendered the series 0-2. Their focus will now be on rescuing pride in the final ODI and gaining rhythm before the T20I leg. Listed below are four notable records and milestones scripted during the second ODI between India and Australia.

#4 First Asian To reach 150 ODI Sixes In SENA Countries

During Rohit Sharma’s fighting half-century, the opener sent two balls into the stands. With those, he attained a landmark — becoming the first Asian to smash 150 sixes in ODIs across SENA nations (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). Before him, only Sanath Jayasuriya (113) and Shahid Afridi (103) had crossed the 100-six mark in these conditions.

#3 First Indian To Complete 1000 ODI Runs Vs Australia In Australia

Rohit Sharma’s 73 came off 97 deliveries including seven fours and two sixes. Along the way, he unlocked another historic mark — becoming the first Indian to aggregate 1000 ODI runs against Australia on Australian soil. He now owns 1071 runs from 21 matches at 56.36 with four tons and three fifties. Virat Kohli trails him with 802 runs.

#2 Third-Youngest Australian To Hit An ODI Fifty

Australia’s Cooper Connolly anchored the chase with class. The youngster struck an unbeaten 61 off 53 balls and sealed the match. At 22 years and 61 days, he became the third-youngest Australian to register an ODI fifty. Ricky Ponting (21y 30d in 1996) and Mark Cosgrove (21y 318d in 2006 vs Bangladesh) sit above him.

#1 Fourth-Highest Opening Run-Getter In ODI History

Rohit Sharma’s 73 also elevated him to fourth place among all-time leading ODI openers, overtaking Adam Gilchrist’s tally of 9200. Rohit now has 9219 runs from 186 innings as an opener. Above him stand Chris Gayle (10179), Sanath Jayasuriya (12740) and record-holder Sachin Tendulkar (15310 runs with 45 tons).
