India captain Shubman Gill attributed his team’s series defeat against Australia to dropped catches and an insufficient total on the board. After losing the first ODI by seven wickets in Perth, India narrowly went down by two wickets in the second match, handing Australia the series win.
Fielding lapses proved costly for India, as they missed at least three chances, including one off Matthew Short, who went on to score a valuable 74 from 78 balls. “We had just enough runs on the board. It’s never easy when you drop a couple of chances and try to defend that kind of total,” Gill admitted during the post-match presentation, acknowledging that his team’s errors in the field tilted the balance.
Pitch Conditions And Rohit’s Comeback Effort
Gill clarified that the pitch did not pose major challenges, pointing out that both sides had equal opportunities. “In the first game, the toss was more crucial because of the rain, but in this one, both teams played for almost 50 overs. The wicket did a little early on, but it settled nicely after 15–20 overs,” he explained.
The skipper also took a moment to praise senior batter Rohit Sharma, who marked his return with a resilient innings of 73. “It’s never easy coming back and playing after a long time. The initial phase was challenging, but I’m very pleased with how he batted. He fought well; I’d say he missed out on a really big knock,” Gill said, appreciating Rohit’s effort despite India’s loss.
Australian Dominance And Zampa’s Match-Winning Spell
Australia, under the leadership of Mitchell Marsh, showcased composure and consistency throughout the series. Marsh credited his bowlers and the younger batters for their clinical execution. “Hazlewood was unbelievable. Our bowling unit kept trying to pick wickets. It was awesome batting from the youngsters—the future is bright for Australian cricket. We’ll certainly enjoy the series win, but won’t celebrate too much tonight. India is a fantastic side, great experience,” Marsh stated.
Leg-spinner Adam Zampa emerged as the standout performer, earning the Player of the Match award for his four-wicket haul that derailed India’s innings. “Nice to beat India. It’s always been a good battle against them, particularly in one-day cricket. Two teams that have adapted to the conditions really well. They’re the best team in the world,” Zampa said.
He also lauded the pacers’ contribution, adding, “Those guys have been owning the power play for a long time… it makes my job easier through the middle. The beauty of Mitch (Marsh) is that he’s chilled, relaxed, never too emotional. We run our own show out there with the ball.”
