Rohit Sharma recalls his thoughts about buying a car when he was signed by Deccan Chargers in the inaugural IPL season

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a cricketing phenomenon since its inception in 2008. Over the years, teams have come and gone due to various financial, legal, and contractual reasons. As the league expanded to a 10-team tournament with the introduction of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2022, several franchises faded into history.

5 IPL franchises that have become defunct

1. Deccan Chargers

The Deccan Chargers were one of the original eight franchises to participate in the inaugural IPL season in 2008. Owned by Deccan Chronicle Holdings Ltd, their journey began with a rocky start as they finished at the bottom of the points table. However, the team’s fortunes turned dramatically in 2009 under the inspiring leadership of Adam Gilchrist. That season, held in South Africa, saw the Chargers make an incredible comeback, clinching their maiden IPL title by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the final.

Despite their on-field success, the Deccan Chargers faced significant financial difficulties off the field. By 2012, the franchise was grappling with financial instability and struggling to meet contractual obligations. These issues eventually led to the termination of their IPL contract by the governing council due to a breach of agreement terms. Following their exit from the league, the team was replaced by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013, bringing an end to the Deccan Chargers’ journey in the IPL.

2. Kochi Tuskers

The Kochi Tuskers Kerala made their IPL debut in 2011 as part of the league’s expansion, marking Kerala’s entry into the prestigious tournament. Despite the anticipation surrounding their inclusion, their inaugural season ended in disappointment, as the team finished eighth on the points table.

Unfortunately, financial instability became the franchise’s downfall. Kochi Tuskers Kerala failed to pay the mandatory 10% bank guarantee required as part of their franchise fee at the beginning of the season. This breach of agreement led the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to terminate their contract on September 19, 2011. Subsequently, the team was disbanded, and its players were released into the mini-auction for the following IPL season, bringing an abrupt end to their short-lived journey in the league.

3. Pune Warriors

The Pune Warriors India, introduced in the IPL in 2011, were owned by Sahara Group Sports Limited. With high-profile players like Yuvraj Singh and Sourav Ganguly in their ranks, expectations were high for the franchise. However, the team failed to deliver consistent performances on the field, finishing ninth in both the 2011 and 2012 seasons, and eighth in 2013.

Off the field, financial instability became the ultimate hurdle for the Pune Warriors India. The franchise found itself embroiled in a dispute with the BCCI over franchise fees, leading to Sahara Group pulling out of the league in 2013. Later that year, the governing body officially terminated the team’s IPL contract, bringing an end to their short-lived journey in the tournament.

4. Gujarat Lions

The Gujarat Lions made their debut in the IPL in 2016 as a temporary replacement, introduced alongside Rising Pune Supergiant to fill the void left by the suspension of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) due to the spot-fixing scandal. In their very first season, the team made an incredible impact, topping the points table with nine wins in 14 games. Despite their strong performance in the league stage, the Lions fell short in the playoffs, losing to eventual champions Sunrisers Hyderabad.

However, the Gujarat Lions’ journey was short-lived. With CSK and RR making their return in 2018, the franchise’s temporary tenure came to an end. Although their time in the IPL was brief, the Lions left behind a legacy of resilience and determination, particularly with their remarkable debut season. Their two-year stint remains a memorable chapter in IPL history.

5. Rising Pune Supergiant

The Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) was introduced to the IPL in 2016 as a temporary replacement for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), who were suspended due to the spot-fixing scandal. Much like the Gujarat Lions, RPS filled the void left by these iconic teams and brought excitement to the tournament. Under the leadership of Steve Smith in IPL 2017, they delivered an outstanding performance, reaching the final. In a nail-biting match against Mumbai Indians, they fell short by just one run in a dramatic last-ball thriller, marking a bittersweet end to their season.

However, the Rising Pune Supergiant’s journey was cut short with the return of CSK and RR in 2018. As their existence was always intended to be temporary, the franchise was dissolved after the 2017 season. Despite their brief tenure, RPS left behind a legacy of competitiveness and resilience, with their near-title-winning campaign in 2017 standing out as a highlight in their IPL story.
