South African captain Dean Elgar won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a remarkable bowling effort as the hosts were bundled out for just 55 in the first session itself thanks to Siraj’s 6 for 15 in 9 overs.

The Indian team registered an unwanted record during the first innings of the 2nd Test match played at Newlands, Cape Town on 3rd January 2024. After being in a comfortable position at 153 for 4, India could not add any runs and were dismissed at the same score. A total of six Indian batters could not open their account.

1. 6 Ducks vs South Africa in 2024

After bowling out South Africa for 55 in the first innings, Yashavi Jaiswal was dismissed by Rabada without opening his account. Kohli was the top scorer with 46 while Rohit Sharma’s 39 and Gill’s 36 helped India take the lead.

Shreyas Iyer was dismissed without opening his account against Nandie Burger. Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna could not open his account. Mukesh Kumar remained unbeaten on 0 as India were bundled out for 153 losing their last six wickets without adding any runs.

Thanks to knocks by Rohit, Gill and Virat Kohli, the Indian team took a decent lead of 98 runs. It was a tough pitch to bat on as there was too much bounce on the first day itself.

2. 6 Ducks vs England in 2014

The Indian batting unit struggled badly during the 4th test match played at Old Trafford, Manchester to be played from 7th to 11th August 2014. It was a disappointing outing for the Indian team in that encounter.

Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first. Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Pankaj Singh were all dismissed without opening their account. The Indian team were bundled out for 152 in the first innings.

It was another disappointing performance by the Indian team in the second innings. They could only score 161 as they lost by an innings and 54. The match ended on 3rd day.

3. 5 Ducks vs Australia in 1948

The Indian team registered 5 ducks during the 2nd innings of the 4th Test at Adelaide Oval from 23rd January to 28th January 1948. Australia posted a massive total of 674 runs in the first innings.

After being asked to follow on, the Indian batters struggled with 5 batters being dismissed for ducks. Vinoo Mankad, captain Lala Amarnath, Gogumal Kischeand, Khandu Rangnekar and Khokan Sen could not open their account. The Indian team suffered a huge loss by an innings and 16 runs.

It was a disappointing outing by the Indian batters in both innings. Indian team posted 381 runs in the first innings and then bowled out for 277 in the second outing after being asked to follow on.

4. 5 Ducks vs England in 1952

Another instance took place where the Indian batters registered 5 ducks during the first test match played at Headingly, Leeds from 5th-9th June 1952. The Indian team scored 293 runs in the first innings with Vijay Manjrekar scoring 133.

The second innings saw Pankaj Roy, Datta Gaekwad, MK Mantri, Vijay Manjrekar and Gulabrai Ramchand could not open their accounts. They were bundled out for 165 in the second innings setting England the target of 125. England chased down the target with 7 wickets remaining.

5. 5 Ducks vs New Zealand in 1999

Another instance where the Indian batters registered ducks during the first Test match against New Zealand at Mohali, Chandigarh from 10th to 14th October 1999. It was a horrible outing in the first innings for the Indian team. Devang Gandhi, Sadagoppan Ramesh, Vijay Bhardwaj, Sunil Joshi and Venkatesh Prasad were dismissed for ducks.

The Indian team were bundled out for just 83. In reply, New Zealand could only score 215 in their first innings. In their 2nd innings, India posted a massive total of 585 for 3 declared. The match ended in a draw as New Zealand scored 251 for 7 chasing down the target of 374.
