The hard-hitting left-handed batsmen from Sri Lanka, especially in One-day internationals, played a total of 110 test matches and 445 ODI matches for the country. In 445 ODI matches, he scored a total of 13430 runs with 28 centuries and 68 centuries.

He made his test debut for Sri Lanka on 22nd February 1991 against New Zealand and retired on 1st December 2007. In ODI format, he made his debut on 26th December 1989 and retired on 28th June 2011.

After completing cricketing career, he entered into politics in 2010 as a candidate of Matara District. He became the Deputy Minister of United People’s Freedom Alliance government led by Mahinda Rajapaksa.

On June 2015, Sanath Jayasuriya with 3 other leaders took over from Maithripala Sirisena as new deputy ministers. He was appointed as Deputy Minister of Local government and Rural Development.  After politics, he was appointed as Chairman selectors of Sri Lankan cricket.
