Australia put their campaign back on track with a resounding seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka played at Optus Stadium, Perth on October 24, 2022.
Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to field first. Pat Cummins provided an early breakthrough by dismissing Kusal Mendis. Dhananjay de Silva and Pathum Nissanka steadied the ship taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Both Lankan batters kept the scoreboard ticking not allowing Australian bowlers to settle.
The 35-year-old David Warner showed his fielding skills as he saved runs while trying to go for a catch. He then produced a stunning catch to dismiss Dhananjaya de Silva’s leaping at long-on.
It took place in the 12th over as both Dhanajaya and Pathum Nissanka looked to push on the scoring rate and David Warner plucked out a stunning catch. Dhananjay de Silva and Nissanka added 69 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Australian bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals before Chamika Karaunate and Charith Asalanaka added unbeaten 37 runs for the 7th wicket. Sri Lanka posted 157 for 6 in 20 overs.

Chasing 158 runs to win, Warner and Finch began off cautiously against disciplined Lankan bowling. Mitchell Marsh showed intent putting enough pressure on Sri Lankan spinners along with Finch. Glenn Maxwell never allowed Hasranaga to settle with aggressive shots. A sensational catch by substitute Bandara grabbed the wicket of Maxwell.
Marcus Stoinis provided an attacking display putting the Lankan bowlers under immense pressure especially Hasranaga and Theekshana. He registered the fastest fifty by an Australian batter in the T20I format off just 17 balls. It was an explosive batting display for Stoinis as he kept the momentum going while Aaron Finch gave great support to him.
The Australian team won the match by 7 wickets with 21 balls to spare. For his sensational unbeaten 59 off 18 balls, Marcus Stoinis was named the player of the match award.
They would be looking to continue the momentum against arch-rivals England on 28th October at MCG.
