New Zealand came agonizingly close to lifting their maiden World Cup as Martin Guptill scrapped for a second run before England”s Jos Buttler ran him out in order to win it for the hosts.

Both the teams were tied at the end of the game and even the Super Over couldn”t set them apart. Eoin Morgan”s men were declared winners based on the higher number of boundaries being hit and it was clearly a heartbreak for the Blackcaps.

Guptill”s heartache and England”s victory

Guptill,32, had a poor run with the bat throughout the campaign. New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson led the team from the front and with the willow in hand. And apart from him, veteran batsman Ross Taylor chipped in with vital contributions. While the Englishmen were celebrating a historic victory, the Kiwis were getting consoled out in the middle.

Guptill posted a heartfelt message on photo-sharing site Instagram. He termed the eventful day as both the best and worst. The opener was sharp in the field, his biggest moment of the marquee event came calling when he hit a direct-hit to run out India”s MS Dhoni and eliminate one of the favourites in the tournament.

“Hard to believe it”s been a week since that incredible Final at Lords. I think it was both the best and worst day of my cricketing life! So many different emotions, but mainly proud to represent New Zealand and play for the blackcapsnz alongside a great group of mates. Thank you to everyone for all your support, it has been amazing,” Guptill wrote on Instagram.
