In the ongoing Big Bash League, Steve Smith shone once more for the Sydney Sixers against the Hobart Hurricanes (BBL). On Monday, January 23, the Sixers scored 16 runs off a single legal delivery from Joel Paris in the second over.

Smith hit a six off a no-ball at deep backward square leg. Paris responded with five wides. Off the free-hit delivery, the in-form batter then scored a boundary towards the square leg. The total ended up being 21 runs.

Smith’s purple patch continued, as he scored 66 runs off 33 balls at a strike rate of 200, including six maximums and four boundaries.

Steve Smith is in a sublime form:

The right-hander also became the BBL’s leading six-hitter in the current season. So far in the tournament, the Sixers’ opener has hit 24 sixes and scored 328 runs in four games.

Smith recently scored 101 off 56 balls in a game against the Adelaide Strikers. He then bowled an unbeaten 125 off 66 balls against the Sydney Thunder.

Let take a look at his unreal numbers in the BBL this season:

  • Steve Smith (2) now leads the BBL 2022-23 in hundreds. Matthew Short and Joe Clarke are the other two centurions, each with one century.
  • Steve Smith now has the most sixes (24) in the BBL 2022-23.
  • Steve Smith became the second batter to score consecutive centuries in BBL after Ben McDermott, who did it in 2021.
  • In addition, he made history as the Sydney Sixers’ first batter to reach the century mark.

The Sixers, who had already secured second place and a spot in The Qualifier against first-placed Perth on Saturday, won 7-180 at Blundstone Arena. The Hurricanes are still in seventh place on the ladder and will need to beat the Brisbane Heat on Wednesday and rely on other results to make the top five.
