Wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik feels Team India might opt for split captaincy if they don’t do well at the ICC World Cup 2023, which will take place later this year in India. He expressed that if the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma manages something special at the mega-event, he is likely to continue as the captain in white-ball cricket.

Rohit Sharma has been India’s captain in 50-over cricket after Virat Kohli was sacked. He also led the Indian team in T20Is, until the 2022 T20 World Cup. After that, the right-handed batter hasn’t played a single T20I. Subsequently, talks about the Indian team opting for split captaincy started doing rounds.

Wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik shared his thoughts on the matter. Speaking to Cricbuzz, he expressed,

“If the case presents itself, why not? But right now, it is not right for me to say for two reasons. One, India are only playing three T20s after this until the 2023 World Cup, they face the West Indies after the IPL. Once that tournament is done, I think we will know exactly where things stand.”

“If Rohit Sharma’s team doesn’t go on to do something special there, we could very well see a chance of split captaincy, I guess the opportunity will present itself at that point of time. Whereas if Rohit goes on to achieve something special, we will all like to think differently and give him a crack at the 2024 T20 World Cup if he himself is willing to play that,” added Dinesh Karthik.

Hardik has done a phenomenal job: Dinesh Karthik

Hardik Pandya has fared well as a stand-in skipper for Team India in T20Is so far. He has led the team from the front, contributing all-round. Dinesh Karthik praised Hardik Pandya and expressed that the all-rounder lives for big games, just like Virat Kohli. The wicket-keeper batter said to Cricbuzz,

“For the moment, I do believe that Hardik has done a phenomenal job. He lives for the big games. After Virat Kohli if I have seem somebody who wants those big games, it is Hardik Pandya. You would have to put Bumrah in that list as well. As a batter, Hardik Pandya loves those big occasions.”

Hardik Pandya is leading Team India in the ongoing three-match T20I series at home against New Zealand. The hosts lost the first game by 21 runs, failing to chase down 177 runs.
