Under the captaincy of Steve Smith, the Australian Cricket Team registered a 21-run win over hosts India in 3rd and deciding One-day international match played at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 22 March 2023.
Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head provided a quickfire start for the opening wicket putting on 68 runs before losing quick wickets. Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Mitchell Starc, and Adam Zampa provided some valuable runs to help Australia post 269 runs in 49 overs.
The Australian bowling looked impressive with Adam Zampa picking 4 wickets while Ashton Agar 2 after an impressive start by Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Steve Smith made impressive field placements keeping the pressure on the Indian batters.
India’s ace off-spinner R Ashwin was impressed with Steve Smith’s captaincy and said his captaincy was made in heaven.
Australia began the ODI series with a 5-wicket loss in the first One-day international in Mumbai. They returned with a bang winning the 2nd ODI match by thumping 10 wickets in Vizag. Steve Smith was banned from captaincy post the sandpaper gate in 2018 during the Test match in South Africa.
Steve Smith proved to be a worthy captain with innovative field placements in the ODI series. Australia became the only team to win the ODI series on Indian soil twice.
Steve Smith Impressed In Test matches Also
The Australian Cricket Team was completely outplayed in the first two Test matches at Nagpur and New Delhi. They lost by innings 132 runs at Nagpur and then by 6 wickets in New Delhi.
Pat Cummins went home as her mother was ill. Steve Smith took the mantle of captaincy in the third Test at Indore. He proved his worth as a captain as Australia defeated India by 9 wickets to make a strong comeback in the series. By the virtue of this win, Australia qualified for the finals of the ICC Test Championship 2021/23 finals.
The fourth and final Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad resulted in a draw.
