The Gujarat Titans made their debut Indian Premier League season memorable last year, clinching the championship title, under the leadership of Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder led the team from the front with his brilliant performance. Youngster Shubman Gill was also a top performer for his team last season. Gujarat Titans’ Director of Cricket, Vikram Solanki feels Gill can be Hardik Pandya’s successor as the captain of the franchise.

Shubman Gill slammed 483 runs at an average of 34.50, at a strike rate of 132.32, with four half-centuries. Solanki expressed that the right-handed batter took a lot of responsibility last season, and is a leader in his own right. Speaking during a virtual media session ahead of the 2023 Indian Premier League season, he said,

Shubman is a leader in his own right for the simple fact that he takes on a lot of responsibility. In my mind, it is not important that you play with an asterisk next to a player’s name.”

“He adapted the leadership role last year, by his conduct, by the way he goes about, with his professional attitude towards the game,” he added.

Shubman Gill has a very smart cricketing brain: Vikram Solanki

Vikram Solanki further expressed that he sees Shubman Gill as a potential captaincy candidate for the future. He hailed the Indian cricketer’s leadership qualities and added that Gill has a smart cricketing brain. Solanki also stated that the franchise values the youngster’s opinions.

“Do I think that Shubman will be a leader in the future? Yes absolutely, but no decision has been made about that as yet. He has leadership qualities and is very mature and has an abundant amount of talent,” Solanki said.

“He has a very smart cricketing brain and we will continue to have conversations with Shubman and invite his opinion on every decision we make,” he added.
